Gujarat government decided on Feb. 15 that a 70 % minimum requirement in the HSC examinations is necessary for a student to be selected for admission to medical// and dental colleges in the open category.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi said that 60 % of the weightage for admission in medical and dental colleges would be given to HSC marks. In case of common entrance test (CET), the government said it would be given 40 % weightage.

A senior health department official said that admission in to any medical or dental college will be possible only if the student meets both the HSC and CET criteria.

He also said that for every student applying for a medical/dental college seat a merit list would be prepared based on which admissions to the open category would be offered.

This decision was taken mainly to remove all possible doubts from the parent’s side that CET was a means to allow backdoor entry to non-Gujarati students into the state's medical and dental colleges.
