Eleutherobin From Coral Fights Cancer Cells

A rare Australian coral has found to be effective in the treatment of cancer. Eleutherobin,// a deadly poison which is obtained from the coral is found to kill the cancer cells.

Eleutherobin, which is produced from corals, to stop the fish from feeding on the corals, these toxins paralyze and kills the fish which come for feeding on the corals. The toxins were found to be 100 times stronger than taxol (drug which is widely used now for cancer treatment, which is derived from Pacific yew tree). It is difficult to get large quantities of Eleutherobin from corals, as it produces only minute quantities. But, scientists are working out to synthesize large quantities of the drug in the laboratory, but it has been a very difficult laborious work to isolate and synthesize the product. Professor Mann's team is making good progress in simplifying the procedure to create a substance that mimics nature's proven performer.

Mann told a gathering of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute here this month that work on synthesizing eleutherobin from scratch was well advanced.

Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lung. Majority of people who get lung cancer have been cigarette smokers, but not all people who smoke get lung cancer. And, some people who have never smoked get lung cancer. Normal lung tissue is made up of cells that are programmed by nature to create lungs of a certain shape and function.

Sometimes the instructions to a cell go haywire and that cell and its offspring reproduce wildly, without regard for the shape and function of a lung. That wild reproduction can form tumors that clog up the lung and make it stop functioning as it should. Because of the large size of the lungs, cancer may grow for many years, undetected, without causing suspicion. Lung cancer can spread outside the l
