'Elephant Man' Returns Home

Ryan Wilson, one of the worst affected in the catastrophic 'elephant man' drugs trial was finally allowed home overnight after over three months in hospital//.

However 20-year-old Ryan Wilson has been told to return back to the hospital within a few weeks to remove all his fingers and toes, which have been going black with dry gangrene after his organs failed.

London's Northwick Park Hospital had conducted a trial on six people with an experimental arthritis drug. Moments after their injections the six men were left writhing and screaming in agony when their heads and bodies started swelling.

Mr Wilson caught septicemia and pneumonia, and was in a three-week coma.

Mr Wilson's aunt, Dolores Flanagan, said: ‘He is putting a brave face on it but he will never be able to achieve his dream of being a plumber now or play his beloved football. He will be in a wheelchair when he comes out but he is determined that eventually he will get up and walk.’

Four of the men have won an interim $25,000 as compensation.
