Elderly people are more at risk from eye damage

Increasing stiffness of the eyes, which has aged, makes them more at risk to damage// and eye injury.

As the eyes age along with the person the lens of the eyes become stiff and more susceptible to damage. The aged eye lens will be four times as stiff as it were at birth. Researchers of the Wake Forest-Virginia Tech School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences have developed a computer model that can demonstrate how the age related stiffness of the eyes make them more at risk from certain kinds of eye injuries.

According to their research results, as the stiffness of the eye lens decreases with time, the lens becomes unable to withstand deformities caused by injuries and accidents. Thus at that point the lens may be more at risk from damage or dislocation. Such an injury has other effects like that on the eye itself, like the damage to the internal muscles and nerves of the eye that can resulting in breaking down of the internal structures of the eye and bleeding.

The computer model devised by the researchers can not only predict situations where eye can get hurt, but can also demonstrate exactly what can happen when these trauma to eye takes place.
