Egg Throwing – Not a Laughing Matter anymor

A recent British study has revealed that throwing raw eggs at people either in protest or as part of Halloween fun may result in serious eye injury.//

The study has been published in the Emergency Medicine Journal which revealed that grave eye injuries could result from lobbing raw eggs at people.

Researchers at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital studied over 18,000 patients requiring eye treatment from November 2004 to December 2005.

Among them 13 patients had sustained injuries following assault with a raw egg. Twelve of them were men, with an average age of 27.

Nine of these people had their left eye injured, and only one person had his eyesight unaffected by the incident. Most of these incidents occurred in October, around Halloween.

The study authors write, "The dimensions of an egg are similar to those of a squash ball, with a considerably greater weight, meaning that eggs as missiles can easily fit into the orbital rim, causing severe blunt injury even when thrown by hand."
