A research conducted by an Australian reported that dummy usage should be evaded by the parents except when there is a cot death risk.//
But Garth Kendall, Developmental epidemiologist of Perth's Telethon Institute for Child Health Research stated that dummy usage resulted in reduced breast feeding.
It is also found that there is an association between dummy usage and reduced risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
On the other hand mother’s milk increased immunity and brain development of the child.
The researcher and his team concluded suggesting that parents should shun the usage of dummy and increase breast feeding as SIDS has a very low occurrence.
But incase of families suffering from previous history of SIDS then they can adopt the usage of dummy. He also mentioned that there are no concrete evidences that dummy usage reduces SIDS incidence.
Another research team from California had revealed that dummy usage has reduced the cot death risk by 90% by analyzing 185 babies thought to have died due to SIDS and 312 normal babies.
They have winded up saying that there is a decrease of 92% in the deaths if dummies are used irrespective of the babies sleeping position.
To this the Australian team has told that the Californian research is unconvincing and questionable. It said that babies can be protected from SIDS by making sure that they are asleep on the back without covering their face.
They also have a separate safe sleeping program exclusively for babies. Statistics show that this program has reduced cot deaths from 500 to 70/ year. '"/>
