Drug Trial Victims to Sue Firm

Six people, including an Indian student are suing a US-based research firm for a botched drug trial here for which they had volunteered only to be admitted to intensive care with multiple organ failures. //

Nav Modi, 24, and five other youngsters are claiming millions of pounds for the devastating blunders made during the trial conducted by Paraxel in May. Their heads swelled like baloons and organs failed after being given TGN 1412 at Northwick Park Hospital in northwest London.

The experimental drug was designed to treat leukaemia, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.

"The least I'd expect is Parexel to compensate us quickly," Modi was quoted by the 'Daily Mirror' as saying.

The victims' move comes amidst release of an official report that recommended steps such as trials of immune drugs only on ill patients and centres set up for riskier studies and also giving the first dose to one person at a time.

"Unfortunately, these recommendations come too late for our clients," Solicitor Martyn Day, who represents four of the six volunteers, told the newspaper.

He urged Parexel to settle without a court fight.
