Queensland Medical Board has finally served Dr Death, Jayant Patel, linked to 17 patient deaths, with his legal papers. The Board hopes for a direction hearing in the Health Practitioners Tribunal next month. //

The rogue surgeon has also been served with a $2 million lawsuit in Portland, United States after the death of three-year old Ian McClellan who died of toxic shock after a routine abdominal surgery.

The Indian-trained doctor is said to have been responsible for 17 patient deaths at the Bundaberg Base Hospital in southeast Queensland.

The Medical Board had laid formal chargers against Patel alleging incompetence. The Board has served legal papers to Dr Patel’s Brisbane lawyers after weeks of him evading the lawsuit.

The Board’s executive officer Jim O'Dempsey has said that the board would ask for the maximum penalty if he action proved to be a success.

All over the world, registration boards would be informed of the outcome of the tribunal and any registration application that would be received by them from Dr Patel would be refused.

Beryl Crosby, of the patient support group, has said that with this justice would be served because Dr Patel would never be able to work anywhere again.
