Doctors Suggest Tax on High Calorie Diet to Deter Intake

Doctors at the American Medical Association's annual conference are planning to demand the government to levy heavy tax on the America's soft drinks industry //. This is to mainly combat the nation's obesity epidemic. The issue mainly addresses the sweeteners put in sugary drinks and also the amount of salt added to burgers and processed foods. The move was taken to reduce the number of deaths linked to obesity. Due to this the sales of soft drinks in U.S. schools are on the decline and are replaced healthier low-calorie drinks, plus milk and certain fruit juices.

But the delegates at its Chicago conference are pointing out to the high fructose corn syrup which is the sweetener added to everything from ketchup to cola. Due to these taxes about ￡500million a year funds have been gathered says Michael Jacobsen, director of the Centre for Science and the Public Interest, an independent health watchdog. According to statistics it was found that more than 30,000 Britons die each year because of obesity. Life insurance companies are considering increased premiums for overweight clients as they suffer from increased rates of heart disease and cancer.
