Pregnancy is a time of great joy and expectation as both the expectant mother and her family prepare themselves to welcome the newcomer. Some women however are not able to experience the bliss due to several constraints // , and end up with nothing more than psychological distress. A few of the factors that might reduce the joy of pregnancy are discussed in this special report.

Abuse during pregnancy: Abuse of the pregnant women is a problem that has been haunting women globally. This evil is more prevalent in developing countries such as India. A latest study conducted in 2003 revealed a 4 to 29% prevalence of partner violence among pregnant women in the developing countries. Alarmingly, this rate was as high as 22% in the Indian scenario. Although it is known that partner violence occurs during pregnancy, the causative factors or risk factors that contribute to the same. Partner abuse can either be physical, psychological or sexual. Threats of harm, controlling or authoritative behavior, jealousy and isolation attempts may contribute to psychological abuse. Physical abuse can include direct or indirect blow to the lower abdominal area or exertion of force, kidnap attempts or in worst instances, even murder. Fetal fractures, increased susceptibility to infection, uterine rupture/ trauma, miscarriages and premature deliveries may be a consequence of physical abuse during pregnancy. In addition, elevated stress levels, depression could have disastrous effects on both the mother and the fetus.

Female infanticide: Reports of female infanticide have been reported since the early times. However, it is not until recently that such issues have attracted public attention. The condition is however a rarely observed phenomenon when compared to sex-selective abortion.
