Diabetics To Seek Mental Counseling To Cope With Stress

Diabetics should make it a point to seek mental counseling. Experts say diabetics under mental distress raise their risk for heart disease // because of unhealthy habits they implement to deal with the stress.

The study, which sampled 4,241 diabetics, showed nearly 13 percent of respondents experience psychological symptoms such as stress, depression, anxiety or other emotional problems.Diabetics under mental distress are more likely than non-stressed diabetics to smoke (19 percent vs. 13 percent), have high cholesterol (51 percent vs. 42 percent), have higher blood pressure (63 percent vs. 54 percent), and avoid cardiovascular activity (44 percent vs. 35 percent).

Thus researchers stress on the need for mental health professionals to be involved in the care of diabetic persons since the management of diabetes is multi-faceted, complex, and demanding.
