Diabetes Rates Soar High in NSW

In the past two decades the incidence of diabetes in NSW has grown two-fold, according to a recent study. //

Obesity which is one of the major contributing factors is also on the increase and presently 50% of the adult and 25% of the child population is on the overweight or obese side.

In 1997 the incidence of diabetics in NSW was 4.3% for women and 5.2% for men which has hiked up to 6.9 and 8.4% until last year. 90% o which belonged to Type 2 Diabetes which is associated with sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

Health Achievements:

Dr Denise Robinson, NSW chief health officer reported that there had been a number of public health achievements inclusive of increased life expectancy because of reduction of death due to cardiac problems and cancer.

John Hatzistergos, NSW Health Minister said that he would guide the state governments resources. He added on, "We cannot afford to become complacent."

"The number of deaths from cancer in NSW is still too high, and we have other emerging health issues like childhood obesity, Type 2 diabetes and injuries from falls."
