Despite One More Death, Dengue Cases Continue to Fall in India

One person died of dengue in the capital Thursday taking the death toll in India due to the mosquito-borne disease to 130 even though there was a considerable// fall in the number of fresh cases.

The number of cases has drastically fallen in the past two days with only 74 cases being reported Wednesday across the country, including 63 from Delhi, due to winter setting in many parts.

Officials said it was easily one of the lowest reported on a single day since the mosquito-borne viral outbreak began in early September.

An official of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme said earlier around 250 cases were being reported everyday but the numbers had fallen substantially in the past one week.

He said the states that continued to report fresh cases were West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

The latest victim of the deadly viral disease was Sone Lal, 50, from east Delhi who died at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) within six hours of being admitted.

"He died of haemorrhage as his condition was serious," said D.K. Sharma, medical superintendent of AIIMS.

He said the hospital was looking after 179 patients while 25 people were under observation.

Delhi Health Secretary D.S. Negi said deaths would continue to be reported till the time cases are being reported in the city.

"We think that if this declining trend continues, we would soon stop getting any more cases," he said.
