Depression In Adults May Result From Childhood Verbal Abuse

A study by Florida State University researchers said, ‘Self-critical adult who are prone to depression and anxiety, are made when they are grown up in a verbally// abused environment in their childhood years’.

Verbally abused people are 1.6 times more likely to have symptoms of depression and anxiety as those who had not been verbally abused, a study on 5,614 people aged between 15 and 54, conducted by Florida State University researchers revealed.

Professor Natalie Sachs-Ericsson explained, ‘Childhood abuse of any type has the tendency to create self-critical mentalities during adulthood’.

Parents must be well educated about the long-term effects of verbal abuse on their children.

Researchers assess self-criticism of the participants, by making them respond to statements such as, ‘I live on my mistake more than I should,’ and ‘I realize a significant difference between how I am now and how I would like to be’.

Parental physical abuse (6.6 per cent) or sexual abuse by a relative or stepparent (4.5 per cent) were resulted more self-critical state to the subjects, but self-criticism may not be an important factor in the development of depression and anxiety for physically and sexually abused participants.

Journal of Affective Disorders have published about verbal abuse and its effect on adulthood.
