Delhi's Hottest Day at 44.1 Degrees Celsius

The mercury crossed the 44 degrees Celsius mark in Delhi Saturday, leaving millions of residents sweating it out in the hottest day of the season so far.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the national capital recorded a maximum temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius, three degrees above the normal level, and a minimum of 27 degrees Celsius.

Delhi had recorded a maximum of 42.7 degrees in May 15, the hottest day of the year till Friday.

"The southwest monsoon may have entered a few southern states of India yet it is pure summer in Delhi. The temperature may not slide Sunday as well," said an IMD official.

"It's the hottest day of the year in the capital and as far as June 2 is concerned Saturday was the hottest June 2 in last four years," he told IANS, adding that last year Delhi had witnessed 41 degrees Celsius on the same day.

Meanwhile, residents said they had a tough day.

"After a weeklong respite, it was too hot today. When I went out of my home at around 3 p.m., my body was almost burning," said Sarvesh Tiwari, a marketing executive.

"It was becoming almost impossible to drive the bike. I finally took a pack of ice cubs to cool myself on my way to Gurgaon from Mayur Vihar," said Subhash Padhi, a resident of east Delhi.
