Delhi children to receive anti-polio drops Sunday

The anti-polio vaccine would be administered Sunday to around 2.6 million children below the age of five in a fresh round of pulse-polio immunisation// campaign in Delhi which has reported five polio cases this year.

Ahead of the campaign, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Saturday expressed concern over the fresh cases but promised to take all possible measures to eradicate the disease.

She said the migrant population that arrives in Delhi every day to look for jobs could also be responsible for polio cases in the national capital.

"In view of low nutrition level of children in our country, repetition of the anti-polio dose for more than five times becomes imperative," Dikshit said after administering the drop to a few kids at her residence.

From an average of about 500 polio cases in Delhi in 1994-95, only one case was reported in 2005.

Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri conveyed his gratitude towards Rotary Club and other NGOs for making the ongoing campaign a success in Delhi.

Nearly 23,000 workers and employees of the health department would be deployed at 7,500 booths from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. to ensure maximum reach.
