Deep Brain Stimulation May Help Depression,,

According to a latest study by researchers, brain stimulation may help depressive patients, when other forms // of treatment do not show any result on them.

People suffering from sustained depression for over 10 years had reacted positively to stimulation of their brains, when other medication were not working. Electrodes surgically planted in that part of the brain associated with depressive feelings have shown a noticeable change of depression from the patients.

When brain was stimulated patients exhibited increased physiological activites and more involvement in talking and similar activities. Initially, the reactions were happening only after the immediate stimulation. Later the patients were able to sustain their emotional state out of depression for long.

Depression is the state of extreme melancholy, where patients who exhibit this condition may develop severe apathy towards their environment. Their physical activity may lessen considerably where they can spend hours in any single posture. Till date treatment was only done by routine prescription of antidepressants and psychotherapy, at times even electro-convulsive therapy was used.

The current study results are published in the latest issue of the journal Neuron
