Customized Post Operation Care Offers Patients a Smooth Transition to Patients into the Community

St. John's Rehab Hospital offers post operative help to cancer patients thereby helps to reduce the waiting times for cancer treatment. // All patients who have cancer surgery such as stomach, gastrointestinal and other major cancer surgeries at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre will be offered a short-stay at the St. John's. This is a continuation of a pilot program started last November. It has admitted 19 patients for a period of three to five weeks at St. John's.

The patients were mainly older people with an average age of 73. This is to reduce the complications that occur when the patients are discharged directly home from acute care. They experience physical, emotional and psychological problems regaining their independence. At the same time if they are kept for a longer time in such specialty hospitals for their post operative care it would result in increase in the waiting list of so many others who have similar problems. Hence to gain maximum recovery, improved quality of care and a smooth transition into the community they are shifted to the St. John's. It's a great step forward for St. John's and very good partnership for Sunnybrook.
