Culling of 2,000 fowls in Indonesia

In Indonesia’s Garut district of West Java province, poultry depopulation is being conducted by culling around 2,000 fowls, as a preventive measure against the spread of// avian flu in this area.

According to Antara news agency, the local Animal Husbandry Service Head, Andi Rachmat said that this plan of mass culling was made after many chickens in the villages of Cigadong and Cijambe tested positive for bird flu.

According to Andi, this mass culling is to be done on 27th and 28th August. Previously, around 3,528 fowls were killed. Totally, 5,528 birds would have been killed.

He said that after the depopulation, vaccination of 70,000 fowls would be done. There are plans for vaccinating 3,00,000 fowls in Garut.

The count of human beings suspected to be infected with avian influenza was found in Garut. Of the 9 cases reported last week, 2 were said to be positive bird flu virus carriers. One of them was a 17-year old boy identified as U and the other was a 9-year old girl identified as ASA.

At the Hasan Sadikin Hospital in Bandung, West Java provincial capital, 2 patients; I (5) and S(6), though tested negative, were still hospitalized. 4 other patients suspected to be infected with bird flu died before the health official was able to test their blood sample. They were, a man initialed M (20), a women initialed EL (35), a girl R (13) and a boy S (4).

According to officials, of the 62 avian flu cases confirmed in Indonesia, 47 died. Though none of the deaths were due to infection with the virus by fellow human being.
