Culling followed by checking: Government to audit the documents, to ascertain no skeletons in the closet!

Ahmedabad: The animal husbandry department had been in the forefront, monitoring the Herculean task of culling of 80,000 chickens and has now initiated checks on the documentation of the dealers. // This is being done to ascertain that no bird brought from Navpur in Maharashtra is still in safe custody. 20 teams comprising of officials and animal disease experts will be overseeing the documents along with local civic officials.

The teams will be checking the invoices and octroi bills of chicken wholesalers, dealers and even retailers. They will also scrutinize the records for business transactions and the storage area. Animal Husbandry Secretary D K Rao has confirmed the checks in his statement‘‘We are checking cold storages and disinfecting refrigerators, besides destroying the old stocks of chicken.’’

The poultry farmers have addressed a letter to the chief minister Narendra Modi to show them a way for an alternative employment for six months. Senior government officials have offered assistance to womenfolk from Uchchaal with a plan to employ them in small scale industries like the cottage industry. An employment scheme for the men folk would be arrived upon soon.

The animal husbandry department will also be conducting workshops to effectively train farmers in methods of sanitation and adopting adequate safety measures in the culling of chicken.
