Cuban Deaf-blind Children Regain Hearing

Nearly 20 Cuban deaf and blind children can hear now, thanks to the implant of an electronic device that has revolutionized the world of profound// neuro-sensorial auditory deficiency.

The patients received the implant at La Pradera International Health Centre in Havana, the Prensa Latina news service reported.

The device turns sounds and speaking signs into electric signals, partially restoring the hearing perception.

Three years ago, the medical authorities carried out a study to determine the number of children suffering from the disease and the appropriate treatments to improve their quality of life, said Nimia Perez, an expert teaching children with hearing problems.

The result was this implant for the profoundly deaf children, whose problems were not solved through the conventional prosthesis, a technique usually applied in patients under 14 years old.

Experts believe this technology has revolutionized the treatment and become an essential aid for treating deafness.
