Cricket Match Lands Mother and Child in ICU after Lathi Charge

Chandigarh: A nine-year-old girl and her mother, injured in a lathi charge during the second one-day international (ODI) between India and England in Faridabad, a satellite town of Delhi, are in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital. //

The little girl, Vidhi, had a broken collarbone and a broken wrist and her condition is being closely monitored by doctors. They said Vidhi had shown some improvement though she continued to be in the ICU of a hospital in Faridabad.

The condition of her mother too was said to be serious with multiple internal injuries.

Both were injured along with others as the Haryana police - notorious for their merciless cane-charge on Gurgaon industrial workers last July - resorted to a cane charge on valid ticket holders outside the Nahar Singh stadium, the venue for the one-day match Friday.

The cane charge led to a stampede in which the mother-daughter duo fell and were trampled as other spectators fled from the police. By the time they were taken to hospital, their condition had become serious.

The district administration, like in the Gurgaon case, defended the police action and said that ticket-less people were trying to get into the stadium due to which the cane charge was resorted to.

Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid, while talking to a TV channel, expressed his dismay at the incident and hoped that the mother-daughter duo would recover soon.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was at the stadium with Railways Minister Lalu Prasad when the cane-charge took place, seemed to defend the police action but added that an inquiry was on.

No official from the state government, district administration or the Haryana cricket association has visited the injured duo nor has any compensation been announced.
