‘Kid gyms’ have aroused as fear about childhood obesity grows and thus private fitness clubs rush// to install child-sized machines, during the past two years. Biggest Junior gym firms, like Shokk and Zig Zag was building new facilities and installing machines for their little customers.

According to NHS standards, the phenomenon of obesity experts, imported from America, said it helps to reduce the epidemic risk factors. In contrast it leads to joint damage and unhealthy muscle development, says sports scientists and psychologists.

Familiar equipments include exercise bikes, sit-up benches and resistance machines, which look identical to adult equipment and provides greater support.

Only a very few mini-gyms were undertaking pilot study. Some machines like mini treadmills, rowing machines and dumb-bells that resemble toys are made to attract children around four to nine.

Prof Jane Wardle, an expert on childhood obesity at University College London, explains childrens can be made active, when gyms were properly monitored. Another expert in sports science, Professor Craig Mahoney, argues negatively about Junior gyms.

Advantageous thing behind it was development of bone structure and density due to physical stress whereas disadvantageous one was the risk of bearing more weight. Rather than heavy exercises, aerobic and anaerobic proves to be better.
