Cortisol Levels Linked to Mental Development of Children

Researchers have found out that the stress experienced by a pregnant woman has a direct bearing on the mental development of their children//. This was disclosed by Vivette Glover of Imperial College, London at a Psychiatrists Conference.

According to this study, if the level of cortisol, the stress hormone in a pregnant mother increases, it results in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) and a delayed cognitive development in their offspring.

If a pregnant woman has a nasty companion and subjects her to a lot emotional strain, it is going to have a negative impact on the development of the child.

The amniotic fluid taken from 125 women were used to measure the levels of cortisol in it. Children born to women with a higher level of cortisol had experienced a delay in many of their milestones. The result was arrived by conducting the stress level test on women before and after delivery. Their children were also observed for eighteen months.
