Cord Blood therapy for bone regeneration

Stem cells from cord blood are to be used for regeneration of broken bones in a new multicentric project at the cost of €2.5 million to be headed by York University and // researchers from UK and Europe. This Multidepartment research project involves researchers from department of biology, sociology and Philosophy from York University is aimed at reviewing the benefits of using cord blood stem cells in the treatment of bone defects and fractures.

Professor Paul Genever, Department of Biology would be heading the project which will be using Mesenchymal Stem cells isolated from Cord blood stem cells for treatment of bone disorders. The project is aimed at using the two million units of Cord blood stored in Europe for use in medical treatment.

Department of Sociology is aimed at development of feasible protocols for the use of stem cells and maintenance of quality, standards and data generated by the work and the Department of Philosophy is to govern the ethical issues of the project to make sure that the project follows strict human ethics.
