Consumption Of Uncooked Fresh Fruits And Vegetables Can Lead To Oral Allergies

Latest findings in a study reveal that fresh fruits and vegetables might cause oral allergies.//

Allergy experts are of the opinion that fresh fruits and vegetables may cause oral allergy syndrome (OAS). The allergy reactions could lead to an itchy mouth, and a swollen throat. It has been suggested that conditions like OAS, or pollen-food syndrome can be caused due to the allergens like ragweed.

Dr. Suzanne S. Teuber, the chairperson of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) Adverse Reactions to Foods Committee said, “The pollen released from ragweed is the airborne allergen most responsible for the onslaught of allergy symptoms at this time of year.” She also added, “In addition to sneezing and itchy, water eyes, and symptoms of OAS, ragweed allergies can take a heavy toll on the allergy sufferer's quality of life.”

It was explained that people who are allergic to ragweed could suffer from symptoms of OAS when they eat bananas, cucumbers, melon, zucchini, sunflower seeds, chamomile tea or Echinacea. While those with birch tree allergies can develop OAS when they eat peaches, apples, pears, cherries, carrots, hazelnuts, kiwis, and almonds.

According to AAAAI an OAS reaction could be prevented if the foods are cooked. They explained that the general symptoms result as a result of ‘cross-reactivity reaction’ between the allergy antibodies.
