Conference on Drink and Drug Abuse in Scotland

More than 250 experts have got together for a conference on drink and drug abuse in Scotland. This is just the curtain raiser, of what is going to be a year long deliberation on the issue. //

Scotland's Futures Forum was instituted in 2005 by the parliament's corporate body to ascertain the key problems facing Scotland and open the channels of communication between politicians, academics and international organizations.

Scotland's Futures Forum, in a bid to counter the problem of drink and drug abuse, had organized a conference of senior police, academics and health experts, named as the Holyrood conference. The conference endeavors to conduct a thorough evaluation of drink and drug abuse.

Tom Wood, who belongs to the Scottish Association of Alcohol and Drug Action Teams, has stressed the importance of prevention methods in the management of alcohol and drug abuse.

Holyrood's Presiding Officer George Reid said: "Through the Futures Forum, we are developing long-term strategic thinking on the issues which Scotland will face in the future. We are engaging with those we represent and those who know the challenges and opportunities that will arise."

According to Labor backbencher Susan Deacon MSP, the need of the hour is an uninhibited discussion with facts and information on the use of alcohol and drugs.
