Condition of Separated Conjoined Twins Improving

The 10-month-old conjoined twins Ram and Laxman, who were separated by a rare surgical operation in Raipur , are improving although the doctors who operated on them said the next 24 to 48 hours are extremely critical.

"They are improving, nothing to worry now, but it does not mean they are out of danger, we are monitoring their condition round the clock and are pleased with the improvement so far," Ashok Sharma, head of the surgical department at Bhimrao Ambedkar Government Hospital, said Wednesday.

Sharma led the five-member team of doctors who operated Tuesday on the twins in a highly complicated and risky surgery that lasted for about five hours. The doctors separated the babies who were joined at the stomach and shared a liver since their birth.

"During the morning and afternoon inspection, we found every health parameter of the boys perfectly okay but there are still some complications as it was a rare surgery to detach the children,' Sharma said.

The children's parents, 36-year-old Ramprasad and 35-year-old Premawati who called the successful operation a miracle, were allowed to watch their babies but not touch them as they are still being kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

"I still can't believe the doctors have done the miracle. I have no words to express my gratitude to the doctors who gave a new life to my kids," said Ramprasad.

Doctors said they will put the children on a liquid diet by Wednesday evening and will be shifted to the general ward after 4 or 5 days if they continue to improve at the present rate.

The operation, which was the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh, stirred a lot of emotions as hundreds of Raipur residents joined the parents of the twins Tuesday to pray for the children's well being.
