Computer System To Predict Deep Vein Thrombosis,,

Researchers have been successful in developing a computer aided alert program that can predict the deep-vein thrombosis in patients. //There had not been much attempts made to prevent the disease before and the current innovation is one of the first of its kind. The researchers are of the opinion that such a prediction may be able to reduce the frequency of the condition in hospitalized patients.

Deep-vein thrombosis or the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel is often a condition that affects people who has been dehydrated, or sitting or lying in the same position for long, like the patients in the hospitals.

Scientists have developed a computer program linked to patient database that will identify hospitalized patients at a risk of this condition. The physicians then need to take preventive steps for the high-risk patients so that the eminent thrombosis can be averted.

The computer program had helped in alerting hospitals to the risk of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism in 41% of the cases. The researchers are of the opinion that such a computer aided program will help the medics to use more of prophylaxis or prevention of a disease like thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in hospital patients who are at a maximum risk from these conditions.

The results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
