Complex Surgery Performed on Eight-Month-Old Egyptian Girl

A complex congenital heart surgery was successfully performed on an eight-month-old Egyptian girl at a leading private hospital here.//

Ebtisam Ibrahim was initially evaluated by a team of paediatric cardiologists of Frontier Lifeline Hospital and was diagnosed to have complete atrio-ventricular septal defect with lung pressures -- a condition wherein there are holes in the upper and lower chambers of the heart and leakage in the valves, Madhu Sankar, a heart surgeon of the hospital, told reporters here today.

The gril underwent an open heart surgery on July 18 that was performed by a team of cardio-thoracic surgeons headed by specialist K M Cherian, he said.

'During the operation, the holes in the heart were closed with a patch and the valves were repaired. The baby did not have any complication during the surgery,' Sankar explained.

'She was kept under observation in the for two days after the surgery and she recorded an uneventful recovery. She will be discharged tomorrow.' Ebtisam's father Ibrahim S Hasaballah, a construction manager, said at first he did not know that there was sufficient medical technology in India to perform a major heart surgery. But his doctor in Egypt told him about the advanced medical facilities in India that were less expensive than those in other countries.

The baby's mother Kamelia, who was visibly happy, said her child was doing very well.
