Aiming at empowering transgenders and those affected by HIV/AIDS, a Community Based Organisation (CBO) was launched here today. //
'Tai Vizhuthugal' (Tamil Nadu AIDS Initiative Roots) would bring together hundreds of transgenders from Coimbatore, Madurai, Vellore, Salem and Chennai, with an aim at empowering and enabling the community to undertake and develop skills for social welfare projects.
The immediate vision of the newly formed collective was to ensure that awareness about "safe health" was spread within 'Aravani' (eunuch) community, Dr N S Murali, secretary, Voluntary Health Services (VHS), an NGO and organiser of CBO, told reporters.
This unique initiative aims at empowering the community by articulating its needs, sharing its day-to-day experiences and giving the member skills to collectively cope with challenges, Murali said.
The formation of the CBO was not only a step towards enhancing the quality of life of the members, but also a major way of preventing discrimination and social ostracism, Dr R Lakshmi Bai, project director, TAI-VHS, said.
