Come July 2007, England to Enforce a Ban on Smoking in Enclosed Public Places

London: The British government has made public its plan of enforcing a ban on smoking in enclosed public places from July 2007. Offices, cinemas, factories, pubs, bars and such other public places will come under the purview of the ban.// But the ban does not include outdoors or private homes.

All pubs and restaurants in England will be required to put up visible “No smoking” warnings in their location from July 1st, 2007. According to Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt, "Thousands of people's lives will be saved and the health of thousands more will be protected by the ban. Smoke free legislation will protect everyone from the harm of secondhand smoke ... and relaxing and will provide a more supportive environment for smokers who wish to give up."

This has not been taken very well by many pub owners and smoker groups who fear a blow to their business. The ban will not be applicable to adult care homes, hospices, offshore installations and submarines. The British government is optimistic, that the ban will bring about a change in about 600,000 people, who might quit smoking altogether, after the ban is effective.
