Colonoscopy may be better to detect colon cancer in women

New study had found out that colonoscopy may be the favorable method to screen women// for colorectal cancer.

For patients suspected with colorectal cancer, flexible sigmoidoscopy is used to detect colorectal neoplasias, which are adenomas of 1cm in diameter, adenomas with dysplasia, or cancer. Researchers had used colonoscopy to detect presence of advanced neoplasia that may be cancerous for women who were referred for colon-cancer screenings. Of the 1463 women who underwent colonoscopy 72 of them were shown to have neoplasia. If flexible sigmoidoscopy were alone used, only 25 of the results would have shown advanced neoplasia, and rest would have been given a miss. Flexible sigmoidoscopy alone would have revealed only 35% of the women with advanced neoplasia of the total women with advanced neoplasia. In men this would have been 66.3% of the total cases of advance neoplasia revealed through flexible sigmoidoscopy only.

Researchers from University of Michigan School of Medicine who had conducted the study feel that colonoscopy is a better procedure to detect colorectal cancer than the process of flexible sigmoidoscopy.

The study appears in the latest issue of New England Journal Of Medicine
