The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will release its approval for consumption of meat and milk from cloned animals next week.//

Two federal scientists, Larisa Rudenko and John C. Matheson. have declared that it is safe to consume meat and milk of cloned animals and their offspring. “On no basis can we differentiate the food products from the cloned animals from normal animals,” they say.

A formal recommendation will be released this week by the agency that milk and meat from cloned animals can be sold on grocery store shelves.

Survey shows that the public continues to have reservations about meat of cloned animals, and some even suggest that FDA should keep it off the market.

The FDA made its decision after studying substantial data, all of which indicate that milk and meat from cloned animals is almost identical to such products from normal animals. Laboratory animals raised on clonal food also do not show any abnormality or health problems.

Studies find that consumers’ uneasiness with the concept of eating food from cloned animal is mostly based on unexplainable emotions.

Survey suggests that the public do not know much about the process of cloning. Even though FDA scientists have declared, “There is no science-based reason” to withhold clone-derived meat or milk from the market, people feel that emotional feelings deserve consideration and ignoring them could only end up in worsening the situation.
