Circumcision Can Halve HIV Risk – A Stud

Two major study results from African trials have shown that Circumcision can cut the rate of HIV infection //in men by 50%. The results are consistent with a similar clinical trial by French researchers last year, which stated that circumcision, the surgical removal of foreskin from the penis offered up to 60% protection rate.

National Institutes of Health financed the two studies from Kenya and Uganda, which compared HIV infection rates between groups of men and teenage boys, who were circumcised with equal number of persons who were not at the start of the trial. While examining the interim results of the study, NIH safety panel found that the uncircumcised men were infected at twice the rate of the men who had the procedure.

The study also reported that it would be unethical to continue the study until mid-2007, as it was earlier planned without offering the surgery to the uncircumcised group.
