Cholera Death Toll Reaches 1,156 in Angola

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that there have been an additional 50 deaths from cholera in Angola this week taking the total toll to 1,156 deaths // the country since mid-February.

The WHO said that the epidemic is only growing and is showing no signs of getting controlled. There are a total of 30,612 cases of cholera since February. Half of these were reported from province of Luanda.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection that is caused by contaminated water or food. Some of the most dangerous symptoms of the infection are vomiting and acute diarrhea that can potentially cause dehydration and death within 24 hours.

WHO said that of the 1,109 cases reported in Angola since May 5, 49 had resulted in deaths. Angola has been facing an acute health crisis ever since the 27-year-old civil war ended in 2002. Unsanitary living conditions mean that epidemics like cholera are easily started.
