Children's Waistlines A Predictor Of Future Heart Disease

The size of children's tummies may offer a simple method of identifying whether they are in danger of heart// disease and diabetes at a later age.Among adults, fat around the waist is a warning sign of heart and artery disease. Some studies suggest that it is a better indicator of risk than body mass index, a measurement combining weight and height.

A large waist is said to be associated with metabolic syndrome - a combination of conditions including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and raised levels of blood fats. The study measured the waist size of children aged six to 13 and compared the results with measurements of metabolic syndrome components, such as obesity, insulin resistance, lipids (blood fats including cholesterol and triglycerides) and blood pressure.

The analysis showed that waist circumference was an independent indicator of metabolic syndrome and visceral obesity is regarded as an important risk factor for insulin resistance syndrome in children.

Waist circumference serves as a readily available means to estimate abdominal obesity in the office setting. Children with abdominal obesity, as determined by WC (waist circumference), have increased metabolic risk factors for CVD (cardiovascular disease) and T2DM (type 2 diabetes mellitus).

Medindia on Obesity: Obesity is the commonest disease in the United States. The aged are particularly prone to it, when one by one other physical pleasures have been outlived or denied, and there remains only the joys of the table.
