Children obesity has an option in the form of surgery

Childhood obesity is a grave problem in developed nations as well as in India now//.

According to stats about a third of children in the UK are now overweight.

In new development guidelines have being proposed by the NHS treatment watchdog has allowed stomach surgery for children.

Guidance has been developed by the National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence for preventing and treating obesity in adults and children.

Citing the surgery option doctors say it is although the last but one of the options.

“Surgery can be the only option left”, said Dr Ian Campbell, obesity specialist.

Current estimates suggest just under a third of those under 16 are overweight and 17% of those people are obese. "There are more children who have exhausted all treatment options and who are suffering from uncontrollable diabetes or at risk of heart failure because of their obesity. Surgery can be the only option left," said Dr. Campbell. He also gave the information that in the last 12 months, he had heard of one child in Sheffield and another in Glasgow having stomach surgery. "Surgery - and drug treatment - would only be used when all other measures were exhausted,” was how he put that surgery should be the last resort.

Elaborating on the issue NICE said that parents and family have a huge role to play in avoiding child obesity. Adding that schools are also crucial in ensuring children do not become overweight or obese.
