Children Need Regular Fluoride Varnishes

The possibility of cavity problems in infants can be reduced by 50% with a single fluoride varnish treatment per year. This particular treatment does not have any harmful side effects. The fluoride compound is directly brushed into the teeth. //The Journal of Dental Research published the study findings which say that children who did not receive the fluoride varnish treatment ran a greater chance of developing cavities.

The treatment also enjoys the advantage of being both inexpensive and easy to administer. Infants and small children who belong to Hispanic and Chinese families living in San Francisco were examined by the investigators. They were separated into three groups namely children who receive the varnish treatment once every year, those who receive it twice, and those receiving none at all.

The chances of those children who did not receive fluoride varnish developing tooth decay are much higher, according to the research study. Parents should take their children for a dental visit right from the age of one year, in addition to ensuring regular dental varnishes to the children. Most of the children who participated in this study belonged to the low-income group.
