Children Find Effective Pain Relief With Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen seems to score high as an effective pain reliever for children suffering severe musculoskeletal injuries, as compared to acetaminophen// and codeine. Details of the study are published in the online edition of the journal Pediatrics.

Nearly 336 children aged from 6 to 17 sought treatment for musculoskeletal injury to neck, back and extremities in the emergency department of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. The children were randomly administered oral doses of 15mg per kg of acetaminophen, 10 mg per kg of ibuprofen or 1 mg per kg of codeine; 100 children were assigned each drug group.

The intensity of pain was studied children made a mark on a horizontal pain intensity scale from 0 to 100. Though the study intended to gauge the level of pain after 60 minutes from baseline, yet results were compared periodically by the researchers.

The finding revealed that after 60 minutes, the children who had taken ibuprofen had maximum relief from pain. The researchers inferred that in the treatment of traumatic musculoskeletal injury in children, ibuprofen proves better as a pain reliever as compared to acetaminophen or codeine.
