There are signs in the UK that more children are growing fatter, and they are not bashful about it either, according to sources from the country’s National Obesity Forum. This makes it all the more difficult to convince them that they should lose weight. The country’s Department of Health has revealed that as much as 27.7% of the country’s children are overweight, while 13% are obese. This trend appears to be on the rise with children caring very little about their obesity. Liver failure among adults is directly connected to obesity in the western nations, and the consumption of alcohol can only complicate this matter further.

Hip and knee replacement surgeries will be refused in East Suffolk to people who are obese due to healthcare rationing. This is regardless of the fact that they are enduring unbearable pain and obesity is connected to socio-economic deprivation, and they are generally predominantly poor people. The reason for this decision is reported to be entirely financial, even though such surgeries are likely to be less successful on obese people.

The local population also appears to be in favour of charging obese people for the surgeries which are considered to be due to self-inflicted afflictions. This is in spite of the fact that 50% of the population of the UK are overweight, and 20% are obese. The obese people in the country do not get the sympathy of support groups either, while drug and alcohol abuse are considered as illnesses. Oversized people are reportedly discriminated against at their places of work also. Denying obese people healthcare that others are entitled to is indeed unfair, especially as those who are thus afflicted also pay taxes.

The primary care trusts of the area have declared that operations will not be conducted on people who have a Body Mass Index of 30.
