Child Friendly Zidovudine Preparation for treating HIV infection Approved By The FDA

It is only small things that are difficult to handle. Even when so much has been done to effectively treat diseases like cancer, treating a viral infection has always been a problem. Viral infections are difficult to be treated with medications // because the disease-causing virus has always been potent enough to escape even the newer versions of the developed drugs.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus as it is called has been posing a challenge for scientists for a long time. Various drugs have been implicated in the treatment of symptomatic or asymptomatic form of the disease. The drug exerts antiviral action by inhibiting viral reverse transcriptase, a key enzyme required for the viral replication. The drug therefore prevents the virus from reproducing inside the body.

The Food and Drug Administration has now issued a tentative approval to an anti-AIDS drug developed by the Hyderabad based pharmaceutical company- “Aurobindo Pharma”. It is the first tentatively approved generic version of child-friendly zidovudine oral solution, according to reports by the FDA. The drug has been approved following the fulfillment of the safety, efficacy and quality standards established by the FDA.

Following approval the drug is to be in combination with other drugs used for the same purpose. The generic drug, however, will not be sold in the US due to the strict patents regime.

“FDA is delighted to help ensure that HIV/AIDS products available to children through the President’s emergency programme are safe and effective,” the FDA website said.
