Child Care Centres in Tsunami Hit Indonesia

In Aceh and Nias island of Indonesia which was hit by Tsunami in 2004, the UNICEF has built 226 mother and child care centers//.

Indonesia bore the major brunt of Tsunami which ravaged many countries and islands. Many of the inhabitants were rendered homeless.

By establishing mother and child care centers, UNICEF aims to provide health care facilities besides developmental activities in this Tsunami hit land.

According to UNICEF's Chief of Field Office in Aceh Edouard Beigbeder, these centers strengthen the community based health care system which facilitates a stronger and healthier society resulting in total rehabilitation.

An amount of $11 million has been allotted by UNICEF for the construction of these centers. They have also planned to build 300 schools in this Indonesian island at a cost of $90 million. For UNICEF, this is a maiden attempt in the segment of construction of schools.
