Chikun Gunya Incidence Coming Down In Karna: Minister

The incidence of chikun gunya viral fever that had affected more than 2.85 lakh population in parts of Karnataka was coming down, the state assembly was informed today//.

As against 1.20 lakh cases reported till April this year, it has come down to 57,223 during May and 11,381 in June so far, Minister for Health R Ashok said while making a statement in the house.

Rejecting the Opposition charge that the government has failed to take urgent steps to contain the spread of the disease, Ashok said so far it has released Rs 4.25 crore for supply of medicines in affected districts.

578 fogging machines have been deployed to control mosquitoes which cause the fever and steps were afoot to purchase 888 more machines, he said.

Chikun gunya fever has broken out in 2,860 villages affecting 2.26 lakh population, he said adding the districts of Gulbarga, Bidar, Bellary and Gadag were the worst hit.

Ashok said four official committees have been formed to monitor the situation.

The minister's statement was in response to the issue raised by opposition Congress leader N Dharam Singh yesterday. Singh had flayed the government for not taking steps to contain the disease.
