The Indian State of Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad District appears to be in the grip of chicken pox. In spite of having taken preventive measures, several hundred children in the district have been affected by the disease //which causes cold, fever and diarrhoea.

With the spread of chicken pox, villagers of 90 villages falling under Firozabad District are worried. Even infants are rapidly falling victims to the disease. Interestingly, even medicines don’t seem to have any effect on the spread of the infection. Some villagers go to the extent saying the disease has spread because the health center did not take proper and timely action.

They say that they had informed the nearest health center but no one turned up for treatment. "I am suffering from this disease for the last seven days. My parents say that it is chicken pox. Nearly 150 to 200 children of this village are infected. My father informed the health center of the village but no one has turned up to see me," says Nitu, a patient suffering with chicken pox.

In schools, the infected students have a separate seating arrangement.

According to Desh Deepak Singh, a teacher in Munni Devi Public School, "We have already informed to the primary health center about the infection. Around 80% of the children who are infected with chicken pox have been allowed to attend classes separately."

According to R.S.Lal, the Chief Medical Officer of Firozabad, there is no cure for the disease but he has started taking action to check the spread of the infection.

"Our team of doctors have already visited the affected villages and distributed medicines. The main problem is that there is no cure for chicken pox. We can only control its further communication and can treat patients only on the basis of symptoms like fever, cold, diarrhoea etc.," said Dr.Lal.

Chicken pox is easily transmitted among children, especially infants. The disease is not fatal.
