When there is a general Bird Flu scare in the country,. The city of Chandigarh has grabbed this opportunity and organized a festival of chicken and eggs to ward off this scare.//
The festival began at the parade ground on Saturday and continued through Sunday and attracted hundreds of food lovers who wanted to have a quick bite of chicken at a lowest possible price.
While most people preferred to taste the chicken delicacies, others had their fill of eggs.
The aroma of the chicken dishes was in itself tempting enough for anyone going past the venue. Up for grabs were an array of chicken dishes priced at just Rs.10 and boiled eggs for Re.1.
Three boiled eggs cost Rs.2 and Rs.3 fetched five.
The sale of chicken and eggs have plummeted in some parts of the country ever since the bird flu virus was detected at Navapur village in Maharashtra just over a week ago. Tens of thousands of chickens have been culled in and around Navapur to prevent the spread of the disease.
For the chicken-loving Punjabis, the festival in Chandigarh was quite an attraction. Men, women and children left their avian flu concerns at home to try some of the spicy, deep-fried chicken delicacies.
Anand Singh, a resident of Sector 34, said: "The avian flu aroma of the chicken dishes scare in this region is unwarranted. None of the poultry farm samples in north India have tested positive. I want to have my fill at this mela."
The organizers - All India Poultry Development and Services - said the mela was aimed at creating awareness that eating chicken was absolutely safe if it was fully cooked.
"Make merry while stocks last. It's worth it," said Sonal Singh, a student.
Poultry dealers had organized a similar chicken feast near Kolkata last week.
