Chandigarh to Screen Mothers, Children for Genetic Disorders

Chandigarh has become the first place among states and union territories to enforce screening of all pregnant women and new born children to find any genetic disorder// that could lead to disabilities.

Chandigarh Home Secretary Krishna Mohan Friday said neo-natal screening of all children would be done to check any adverse fallout later.

All government hospitals would introduce screening shortly.

While poor people would be provided the facility free of cost, a nominal fee of Rs.100 would be charged from others instead of the actual cost of the test of Rs.1,000, an official spokesman said here.

The administration has also decided to procure equipment to start screening of thalassemia and sickle cell anemia within the next six months in city hospitals.
