Sixteen councillors in the city - led by a woman mayor - Saturday got themselves tested for HIV as part of a public awareness// campaign.

Officials of the state AIDS control society conducted the tests on Union Minister of State for Finance and local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, mayor Harjinder Kaur and 15 other councillors.

Out of 35 councillors in the local municipal corporation, nearly 20 chose to keep away from the special function organised here for the HIV test.

The society had put up the test facility for the public representatives at the union territory state guest house here under its "Be bold, Know your HIV status" campaign.

Chandigarh's home secretary Krishna Mohan said that the testing availed of by the minister, mayor and other public representatives would go a long way in encouraging the public to shed their reservation about medical test for AIDS.

AIDS control society project director Sonia Trikha said despite the fact that no cure was available for the deadly disease, the success stories in curbing AIDS in Thailand, Uganda and other countries showed that the disease could be prevented.
