Cardiogenic Shock: Deadly Counterpart to Heart Attack: Michael Lim, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, says it’s crucial to be on guard //after a heart attack for a deadly condition called cardiogenic shock, which affects one in 10 heart attack patients and kills nearly half of those. Characterized by low blood pressure, cardiogenic shock is caused by a decreased pumping ability of the heart that cannot adequately supply the body with blood.

'Even with the best treatments, the mortality rate of cardiogenic shock is 50 percent,' says Dr. Lim. “Anyone who has a heart attack is at risk; it doesn’t discriminate.”

If you have this problem, you want to go to the place with the best, most-prepared rescue team – 'one that can fix badly broken hearts,' Dr. Lim says.

Well-timed medical and surgical interventions can significantly decrease the risk of mortality.
