Cancer Hospice Opens New In-patient Unit

A new in-patient unit has been opened in the Marie Curie Cancer Care hospice in Belfast, which has marked a major milestone in its ongoing redevelopment.//

The unit has made provisions for 18 individual en-suite rooms each of which open out onto a courtyard area.

In addition the rooms can provide for a family member to stay overnight with the patient.

Manager of clinical services at the hospice, Sue Curry, claimed that there were still more improvements to come.

She said, "Our next part of the dream, if you like, is going to offer day therapy facilities, outpatients, complementary therapy rooms and one key area that we have never been able to house - and that is a quiet room, a multi-faith room."

The new in-patient unit is the first phase of a £3m redevelopment and has doubled the size of the hospice.

According to the charity its ultimate aim is to realise its vision for October 2006 towards becoming "one of the very best palliative care hospices in the UK".

Still another £1.8m has to be raised in order to fund the completion of the project.
